Surfing
Surfing is one of the main reasons many travellers come to Weligama. The bay is known for its long, gentle waves, making it one of the best places in Sri Lanka for beginners to learn and for intermediate surfers to build confidence.
There are plenty of surf schools and board rental shops along the beachfront, so it is easy to book a lesson or rent a board for a few hours. If you are new to surfing, taking a lesson is the best way to learn the basics, understand the conditions, and feel more comfortable in the water.
Good for: Beginners, intermediate surfers, solo travellers, groups
Best time: Usually during the south coast season, especially from around December to April
Tip: Go early in the morning or later in the afternoon for cooler weather and fewer crowds.
Yoga and Wellness
Weligama has become a popular place for travellers who want to slow down, move their body, and enjoy the relaxed south coast lifestyle. Around the bay and nearby areas, you can find yoga classes, wellness spaces, massage treatments, surf and yoga retreats, and calm places to unwind after a day in the ocean.
A morning yoga class followed by breakfast by the beach or a swim in the bay is one of the best ways to start the day in Weligama. Many places offer drop-in sessions, so you do not always need to commit to a full retreat.
Tip: Check with your hotel, surf camp, or guesthouse for the latest class schedules.
